After writing a recent article on the future of online gambling, which can be found on my website at http://jaswalinstitute.com/the-illegality-of-current-gambling-laws-in-canada-and-the-vince-carter-trade-views-from-the-6/, I received a phone call to attend a dinner with Calvin Ayre, a gambling industry pioneer who, before stepping away from his role as an operator, founded the original Bodog online gaming enterprise and created the global Bodog Brand. Given the opportunity to meet with an industry legend, I packed my bags and jumped on the first flight available.
Over dinner, Calvin and I discussed several topics, including the future of online gambling. Though Calvin has stepped away from his role as an operator, it was clear that he has his finger on the pulse of the industry. Calvin outlined that the issues raised, and analysis conducted, in my article highlight the need for representation in the gaming industry to help stakeholders navigate the shifting regulatory environment. Given my background, knowledge and experience, Calvin suggested that I am well suited to offer a government relations service to stakeholders given the market demand for well informed and trusted advisors. Suffice to say, when Calvin Ayre invites you to a personal dinner, engages you in a deep debate with respect to the future of online gaming and then suggests a course of action, you get it done.
To that end, since my meeting with Calvin in March, with his support, I have added an additional government relations offering with respect to my law firm to help clients assess risk, navigate the regulatory environment and identify solutions. I have established valuable infrastructure to help gaming clients navigate anticipated legal developments. Specifically, given the significant regulatory shifts anticipated with respect to online gaming, I have been working with government agencies to establish advanced consultation on behalf of my clients.
As an entrepreneur, you have to learn to expect the unexpected. However, I must admit that I did not expect that the addition of a business offering in my law firm would come from a spur-of-the-moment dinner with Calvin Ayre; you can’t script this. I’m looking forward to this venture and would like to thank Calvin Ayre for putting me on a new path.
